First OTA update for iOS – 5.0.1 now rolling out to iPhone , iPad and iPod Touch

Have you updated you iPhone or iDevice ?

Looks like Apple finally has an answer for the battery issue surrounding the iPhone 4S. Apple has released the first Over-the-Air update for all iOS devices running on iOs 5 such as the iPhone 3GS, 4 , 4S, iPad , iPad2 , iPod Touch ( 3rd gen and 4th Gen). The update is available Over-the-air meaning you won’t have to download a 700 odd MB file and use iTunes to update your device. In fact I have managed to update 2 iPhones and an iPod touch in a matter of minutes as the OTA update was just 44.6 MB for my iPhone. It would have taken to few hours or days required to download few GBs of files normally.
Just go to Settings->General->Software Update and you should see an update if you are running on iOS 5.
Here is the change log for the iOS 5.0.1 Software update.
  • Fixes bugs affecting battery life

Bill to eliminate per-country caps on green card put on hold

Visa
WASHINGTON: A key legislation to eliminate per-country caps on employment-sponsored green card that would have benefited highly-skilled Indian workers seeking to stay in the US has been blocked by an influential American Senator, saying "it does nothing to better protect Americans."

The bill, the "Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act" (HR 3012), which sailed through the US House of Representatives last week on a 389 to 15 vote, had been sent to the Senate for consideration.

Chuck Grassley, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who has been fighting for major changes in the H-1B rules, placed a "hold" on the bill, saying "it does nothing to better protect Americans."

"I rise to inform my colleagues that I am placing a hold on H R 3012, the Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act," Grassley said on the Senate floor

Aakash: World's cheapest tablet launched; to be sold for $60 in retail

NEW DELHI: The wait for the world's cheapest tablet is finally over! The $35 tablet nicknamed Aakash was launched today and will be available at retail stores at a maximum retail price of Rs 2999 ($60), said its maker Datawind.

"The Rs 3,000 figure is the 'maximum suggested retail price' of the commercial version of the product which we will offer with an embedded cellular modem and SIM," said Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO of Datawind, maker of the world's cheapest tablet.
The $60 tablet for retail sales has an inbuilt cellular modem and SIM to access internet, which will be absent in the $35 device, supplied to the government.
As a business, we need to make a profit, and our distribution channel needs to make a profit, which is all covered in the MRP of Rs 2,999," Mr Tuli told ET.
Both versions of the tablet, will run on Google's Android platform, with WiFi connectivity for internet access and cloud storage. The tablets will have 256 MB of RAM, a 32 GB expandable memory slot and two USB ports.
The commercial version of the tablet would have no duty waivers or subsidy, as in the government's version. An inbuilt cellular modem and SIM card will add to the price of the commercial tablet.
The commercial version of the tablet, is expected be out within 60 days, of its launch on October 5.
Datawind adds that it is supplying to the government at a price of Rs 2200, which includes sales tax and replacement warranty. "The $35 price is achievable at higher volume levels. When we supply the product to the government at $35, then too it will allow us a margin, albeit at higher volumes," Datawind CEO added.
India trails fellow BRIC nations Brazil, Russia and China in the drive to get its 1.2 billion population connected to technologies such as the Internet and mobile phones, a report by risk analysis firm Maplecroft said this year.
The number of Internet users grew 15-fold between 2000 and 2010, according to another recent report. Still, just 8 percent of Indians have access. That compares with nearly 40 percent in China.
Some 19 million people subscribe to mobile phones every month, making India the world's fastest growing market, but most are from the wealthier segment of the population in towns.
Bharat Mehra, an expert on the use of communications technology for development, said the budget tablet could be used to deliver distance learning in rural areas and among students.

Online uproar as India seeks social media screening

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India has urged social network companies including Facebook, Twitter and Google to remove offensive material, unleashing a storm of criticism from Internet users complaining of censorship in the world's largest democracy.
Telecoms and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal met executives from Facebook, Google , Yahoo and Microsoft on Monday to ask them to screen content, but no agreement with the companies was reached, he said.
Sibal denied he was promoting censorship but said some of the images and statements on social media risked fanning tensions in India, which has a long history of deadly religious violence. He said the firms had rebuffed earlier calls to take action.
Socially conservative India already censors some films and books considered obscene or likely to stoke religious conflict.
The country of 1.2 billion people created new rules earlier this year obliging Internet companies to

Andrew Symonds to enter 'Big Boss' house

Mumbai, Dec 6 (ANI): Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds is set to make his debut on 'Big Boss', the Indian version of the reality television show 'Big Brother'.
The Australian all-rounder, who was unveiled as the latest contestant in the show, after his arrival here told the media that he expected the atmosphere of the house to resemble that of a cricket dressing room.
"The idea of the game is survival of the fittest and the smartest and the cleverest. So, I'll be playing the same way the rest of the contestants will be and that is part of the way a cricket dressing room works as a whole, with banter and with fun, so you can get the better of another person. It should be good fun," he said

Indian services sector rebounds in Nov - PMI

BANGALORE (Reuters) - India's services sector expanded in November for the first time in three months as new business accelerated despite persistent inflationary pressures, a survey showed on Monday.
The seasonally adjusted HSBC Markit Business Activity Index -- based on a survey of around 400 firms -- stood at 53.2 in November, above the 50-mark that separates growth from contraction.
It had fallen to 49.1 in October after dropping below 50 for the first time in more than two years in September to 49.8.
"The service sector demonstrated resilience, with both activity and new business on the rise," said Leif Eskesen, economist at HSBC.
"Unfortunately inflation continues to tick up as well, calling for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to

Govt suspends foreign supermarket entry after backlash

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The government has suspended its move to open the country's $450 billion supermarket sector to foreign firms such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc , backtracking over one of its boldest reforms in years in the face of a huge political backlash.
Coming less than two weeks after it announced the move, the retreat is another nail in the coffin of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's economic reform programme, just as Asia's third-largest economy suffers from a growth slowdown and falling investment.
Both ruling Congress party allies and opposition parties, fearing massive job losses for millions of small shopkeepers, had disrupted parliament for two weeks in protest, stalling some key bills such as increased food subsidies for the poor.
The suspension will help cement a view that the world's biggest democracy is an

New laser technology could kill viruses and improve DVDs

New laser technology could kill viruses and improve DVDs

A team led by a professor at the University of California, Riverside Bourns College of Engineering has made a discovery in semiconductor nanowire laser technology that could potentially do everything from kill viruses to increase storage capacity of DVDs.

Ultraviolet semiconductor diode lasers are widely used in data processing, information storage and biology. Their applications have been limited, however, by size, cost and power. The current generation of ultraviolet lasers is based on a material called gallium nitride, but Jianlin Liu, a professor of electrical engineering, and
