The Deadliest Mistakes Job Seekers Make


1. Starting the job search too delayed 


Having overconfidence in your skills and talents cannot fetch you livelihood unless you start trying for it before graduating. Many recent grads make the mistake of waiting for the university results out spending time hanging out with friends and family. Start searching for a job after the freshman year will make it tougher and tougher, so waiting too long to begin the process without much effort can risk landing a job.





2. Outdated job searching devices


Many of the advertisement columns regarding job openings will not bring a favorable chance for you. There are so many online listings coming out. Apart from spending too much of your time on it and trying for anonymous job fairs, it is better if you can find out a job opening through your friends circle. Even if you find a job opening advertisement, trying to find out an inside connection will make easy your entry.








3. Not creating wide networks


Along with believing in your talents, you should also increase your networks. Being in touch with people and letting them to know you are in search of a job will help you know some job openings through your peer groups. There is no shame in asking the job openings. You can make use of your parents’, relatives’, friends’, teachers’ or trainers’ friend circles to land an interview call. Your passive networking activities may cost you a job.  


 

4. A careless resume and cliché cover letter


As you need to be careful in your professional life, as much as you have to be careful in job search also. Resume being the first communication medium between you and your prospective employer, your language skills should be vivid in the resume. More than what you say about yourself, a resume can reveal your personality, your organization skills, interpersonal and communication skills, and your skills in prioritizing important matters (a lot more can be added in the list). Following a cliché and traditional cover letter also harm your job search. Many found passive to customize their cover letter according to the job description and job profile.

5. Doing poor research


Before interviewing, it is important to research about your potential employer. A questioned-answer type interview will be boring for both interviewer and interviewee together. So, your research will help you framing out some spontaneous questions to interviewer which can make a positive impact by making the interview process as informative way of talks.  


 




6. Not cleansing social media profile


Along with crafting a brilliant and shining resume and cover letter, cleansing your social networking profiles is also necessary to do. Either locking down those drunken and partying pictures or removing them will help you not damaging your good name in front of hiring manager. You should know what can be appeared in a search engine when Google it with your name, of course most of the today’s hiring managers will do search with your name. Once you analyze what you posted and in which pictures you are tagged, you have to consider whether you want your grandmother to see that, if ‘no’ that’s it, delete!!!



7. Unprofessional e-mail id


Also, it is noteworthy to mention about the e-mail id you used to send resume. As every employer want a genuine and professional employees, you need to have an email id of your name as it shows reliability than using pet names, or some other names of your choice. Having a mail id with your name will increase the possibility of getting an interview call once you have applied for a post.


 


8. Appearing unprofessional


Wearing a professional look will be an added advantage in job search. There are thousands of styles out there. Even from the nail polish you put to the attire you wear, matters a lot in your entry to a job interview. An unprofessional taste in your social media profile, in your communication, behavior, dressing, and body language will cost you a job. Before, appearing for an interview, many of the career counselors suggest you to practice on a mirror.






9. Failing to express gratitude


Many of the job seekers are failed in the interview for not showing the enough gratitude for the interviewer. Thanking each interviewer in person and also expressing your gratitude for the time they spent, will give you a privilege to be hired. While concluding the interview process with expressing thanks, you also need to ask about the next step in the hiring process. Also sending a thank you note referring the particulars in the interview will be a professional approach for the first step follow-ups.



10. No follow-up/ Too much follow-ups


The better way to lose the job is to not having any follow-ups or annoying the hiring manager with too much of follow-ups. Once you have sent the resume, you have to be in touch with your hiring manager. Sometimes, after sending a resume it needs to be phoned them and enquiring about the interview details which shows how interested you are in that particular job. Until you get the final result, it is advisable for you to make follow-ups. Also, too much follow-ups may irritate your interviewer as they have got many other works than answering you every day.
